The smell of fish filled her nose and Hlìf pulled a face from disgust. The people that were working in the huts, looked at her in a strange way. Even though time had already passed since Halfdan had become earl, some villagers still were distant and afraid towards people like her. To them she was a stranger from Rogaland, one of the warriors that helped throw over their previous earl. But she didn’t care. In fact there wasn’t a lot she truly cared about. Hlìf forgot the smell for a second and looked at the villagers with a challengingly provocative smile on her face. Her feet carried her over the stone path towards a little fishermen hut where they were selling pickled fish. Hlìf stood still in front of the little market stall and grabbed a small coin out of the pocket from her leather pants. ’One of those delicious sea creatures.’ When the man handed her over one of the fish, she catapulted the coin in the air with her thumb, not caring where it would land.

While walking to one of the rocks nearby the water, she watched the fish. It still had its skin, its fins, its eyes. Here stomach turned, but her curiosity was stronger. She was so sick of the dried out mutton meat that she had been eaten for weeks. Apparently the chicken and cows were some kind of holy for the people from Skagen, only used for the eggs and milk they produced. So Hlíf started to pluck on the skin of the fish, that eventually came loose. ’Bhwerck.’ she whispered and held the torn of skin in the sunlight, observing the scales. And then she whisteled from between her lips, a high sound that wouldn’t mean anything for anybody. Except for Sköll. After a few second the dog came running from a distance, stopped in front of her, panting. ’Here, for you my little laystall.’ Sköll sat down, wagging his tail awaiting for the skin of the fish, that Hlíff eventually threw and he caught midair. ’You are the grosest being I have ever met.’ she said while chuckling and torn a piece from the fish, preparing herself for tasting the grossest flavor ever.

Haskell

Haskell teared a piece of bread with his teeth from a hump while he walked over the dusty path connecting the village with the docks. He never had much time to sit still, between helping his parents out on a occasion or to and serving under Halfdan there wasn’t much spear time left, not even to eat. And he even didn’t mind, his devotion for the current earl was high, just as he did with his training from the younger ones. The steady wind blowing over from the sea, pulled his long hair back over his shoulders, carrying the distinct smell of fish and salt water. Haskell chewed the piece of bread further, tossing the rest over his shoulder for what other creatures that were hungry. He grabbed a strain of grass on his way, turning around his own body before walking further. He always needed something in his hand, wasn’t it his sword than it was a strain of grass to amused his fingers with on the way.

When he arrived at the docks his first priority was to check on the boats. He wanted to take the ones learning to become a Viking or shield maiden with him on the open sea, to only give them the feeling, he almost wanted to put them in a storm but that wouldn’t do anybody good. The high whistle pulled his eyes away from the bots to the dog that ran by. He chuckled, knowing that that dog was attached to only one person, somebody who was probably more loyal to King Harald than to Halfdan and actually … it was the same. Those brothers fought as one, ruled as one and knew damn to well how to handle a thing or two. Haskell looked for a second back to the boats before he walked over the wooden docks towards the fishermen huts. Hlif sat on a rock, giving the dog the skin of her dog. When she talked to the animal, him being the grossest animal ever he softly laughed. ‘But a loyal one.’ Haskell said, walking closer over to her. ‘More loyal than any of the once I’m teaching.’ He add. Looking how she had peeled of a piece from her fish. He tilted his head, squeezing his eyes a little. ‘You never ate fish before?’ He asked, suppressing a amused chuckle. It was a rather big piece, surly there would be a fish bone in it. He stand put on a little distant. ‘You gonna regret it when you eat that.’ He shrugged, knowing Hlif wasn’t the social one he just walked further, leaving her with his warning. Only thinking about the fact that she maybe would call him back just made the corner of his lip come up a little.

”But a loyal one.” A deep voice pulled her attention away from Sköll. Hlíf looked over her shoulder and immediately saw the viking warrior with brown hair that was even longer than hers. ”More loyal than any of the ones I’m teaching.” Hlíf raised an eyebrow and nodded her head a little. ”That maybe has something to do with your way of teaching?” There was a smirk on her cheeky face. It was a hard thing to say, especially to someone as Haskell. She knew who he was and what he did for Halfdan and Harald. But the way Hlíf had said it made clear that she didn’t meant to offend him with those words. It was just her special way of humour, and he could like it, or not. She didn’t really care what the outcome was, since her position in Skagen was assured, no matter what she did. Hlíf had proven herself multiple times and always had been loyal to those who she respected, especial the Pääkkönssons. With her head still tilted, she looked at the strong man and lifted her chin.

”You never ate fish before?” Haskell suppressed a soft chuckle, and Hlíf also raised the corner of her mouth. ”I have.” She answered and saw from the corner of her eye that Sköll had finished the skin. ”But never in this.. form Hlíf looked at the smelly fish again, that was still in her hands. ”It tasted like my worst nightmare.” She torn a piece from the whole and brought it towards her nose. ”And this one smells like my worst nightmare.” The sour smell made her stomach turn, but she didn’t pull a muscle. ”You are gonna regret it when you eat that.” Hlíf nodded in approval, and when she did so, she saw how he made preparative to leave. But if there was something that wasn’t smart, it was someone turning your back towards her. ”You are probably right.” She said with a soft raised voice so she’d draw his attention back to her. ”But you know that unsustainable urge to do things that you actually don’t want to do?” Some kind of evil grin appeared on her face as she rolled the piece of fish between her fingers. Her eyes were pointed directly in Haskell’s and her voice started to sound dark. ”Like.. stabbing someone in the back? Even when you know that it isn’t a fair fight?” No, she wasn’t the ’social one’, but when she was spoken to, she loved to make herself the mysterious type instead of the quiet type.
