If people were rain, they'd be drizzle and I'd be a snowstorm

Vigdìs hadn't seen any people in days. Not that she minded, she had always been more of a lone wolf anyway. Although, 'always'... There were times that she’d choose a family dinner over roasting her speered poultry on a self-built fire -like she had been doing for the past few weeks- in a heartbeat, but that was before all the family drama; before she had been sent out by her father to hunt down her own brother. Or those who brutally raped and killed her mother. Yeah… It was some situation, but she never allowed herself to think like that. That mindset would never get her back into Uddevalla’s mansion. The wind playfully swept her dark curls from one shoulder to another as her feet finally found a path that seemed to be more commonly used than those that swayed across the woods. A centre? This discovery was something Vigdìs allowed herself to crookedly grin at. She would kill for some ale.

The alehouse she had entered was just about crowded enough for her to adjust to people again, small groups had gathered in the back and some individuals scattered across the length of the space. The smell of wood, ale and sweat filled her nose, and she couldn’t help but smile at the bittersweet nostalgia of it. Maybe she wasn’t exactly a princess in this village, but they confident way she started towards the bar sure made it seem like she was. Like the room was hers. She knew full well that it wasn’t, that she was supposed to stay inconspicuous during trips like these. However, since she last came home empty handed, something had changed. Her father, King Vidar, had made sure she didn’t view this task like a series of trips. Coming back home wasn’t an option, unless she would bring the King the heads all who had betrayed him back with her. So yes, maybe she had gotten a little more careless. After all, she had about nothing left to lose.

A cup full of fresh ale in her hand, her dark eyes scanned the room. She was supposed to be working, looking for any clues here. But even just a few sips into her beverage, and that idea didn’t appeal to her that much anymore. What -she couldn’t have a little bit of fun? Fun. When was the last time that had happened? This wasn’t like Vigdìs. Normally she wouldn’t let her guard down for anything and would take this mission more serious than anything, but apparently spending two weeks alone in the forest had a certain effect on someone. Besides, not socially mingling, wouldn’t really get her anywhere. Maybe a little small talk would be help gain some useful information. Vigdìs spotted an empty seat next to a young woman, making a visual statement with her long, carmine hair. It seemed she’d come alone. ’So what would be the Skagerrakian way of drinking this?’ she asked her, holding up her drink with her eyebrows lifted in a very serious manner.

Gyda’s first hunt was a complete disaster that turned into a rescue a whole village kind of mission. A village that didn’t even bother to thank her. A village that kept on ignoring her as they did before. But maybe it was for the better. She really didn’t have time to deal with anyone, since she was mostly busy training. And when she wasn’t training, she was busy complaining about her life, so yeah, no time for anyone else.

That day was one of those days that she spent buzzing around with nothing much to do. After her morning training, she went back home and a sudden laziness hit her right in the face. She didn’t show up at the training fields later that afternoon and spent the whole day at home, alone as she always was. The hours went by fairly quickly and she found herself hungry but without any wish to cook her own food, so she grabbed few coins and headed out to the tavern to have something to put under her teeth without actually working hard for it.

The place was too crowded for her taste, but she was there for the food and the alcohol after all, she didn’t have to interact with anyone. Not that anyone was eager to talk to her in the first place, she perfectly knew that. The redhead chose to sit at a table in the farthest and most hidden corner of the room, where no one was probably going to sit willingly. She ordered her food and was very pleased that she didn’t have to wait long to finally put it under her teeth. It wasn’t the best, but she could’ve survived with that. After finishing her food and her first cup of ale, she started ordering more alcohol. She didn’t really plan to get drunk, mostly because she was alone and she wanted to keep her self control, but one or two more cups of ale weren’t supposed to kill her.

Luckily she wasn’t drinking much, because she was fairly sure that someone was actually speaking to her and she wasn’t imagining things. Gyda turned around with her brows furrowed to see who the voice belonged to and was surprised to see a girl actually looking at her, waiting for an answer. The redhead moved her gaze from the girl’s serious face to the cup of ale she was holding in her hands. What did she even mean with Skagerrakian way? Was there a special way to drink ale? Gyda huffed a little with a corner of her lips raised slightly in a grin. ”Why don’t you try drinking it while hanging upside-down on the ceiling?” She teased the girl, her voice pretty venomous, maybe too much. A little voice in the back of her head was telling her to apologise, but it was too weak for the girl to actually listen to it.

She didn't know what had gotten into her. Ale, at the very least. She hadn’t been drinking in months, so maybe half a consumption was enough to put her inhibitions to rest. Vigdìs wasn’t somebody to let her guard down. Ever. But she had reached a point where she was just done. Done with this whole mission, with its endless spiral of no leads. No leads at all. It felt a little strange, she had to admit, but in the end she couldn’t blame herself for wanting some distraction from the constant, cold misery of the empty forests. She wasn’t at home -here, no-one would punish her for not doing what she was expected to. No-one knew her, or her damn mission.

Admittedly, walking up to the first stranger she spotted sitting alone and possibly for a reason, might not have been the best way to rebel against her father's will. Vigdìs didn’t know how to talk to people, let alone in a friendly way. After having posed her question about the only thing she could think of right now -her ale-, it turned out that the person she had chosen to approach, had a habit of that same endearing quality. Her sarcastic come-back should have bothered Vigdìs to the bone, but strangely enough, it made her slightly tilt her neck in curiosity. Normally she would have tried to settle scores, either physically or verbally, and shown she was more powerful than a simple set of venomous words. As it turned out, however, tonight was not normally. ’Alright,’ she accepted that challenge. ’but that sounds like an activity for when I’ve finished a little more of these.’ She raised her cup in demonstration and did something she hadn’t done in years: she chuckled softly. As if the sound had scared her, she pressed her lips together. She remembered the cup in her hand and tried to create a diversion by taking another gulp. She didn’t recognise the person she was slowly becoming and it scared her a little bit to lose control like that. ’It’s a miracle that you’re sitting alone with such wonderfully kind replies,’ she noted sarcastically, as if she wanted to prove she hadn’t lost herself yet. She downed the last bit of her drink and turned to the redhead, attempting to copy the fakely kind grin she had been given earlier.
