come shove me
over the edge.

From the moment the guards cut down the ropes, Maurr fell to his knees. The wooden planks of the platform were soaked with his blood, but it wasn’t as if he could care much about that right now. His body was trembling, more blood was dripping from his back and his thoughts were blurry. He barely noticed that Visna had run up to him until she was kneeling down and gently wiped his face. Her voice was soothing but he didn’t really catch her words. His breathing was all fucked up and he struggled to get enough oxygen through the whimpers of pain. The cold air was sharp in his lungs, but it didn’t compare to the burning feeling on his back. It got even worse when Visna eventually put a cloak over it, the rough fabric was scraping the wounds, but it somehow pulled him back into reality as well. Reflexively, he grabbed Visna’s hand and grasped it firmly. The cloak had pulled him out of his daze, but she was the one that kept him there. As an anchor that connected him to his consciousness.

His mind was still processing everything, ever so slowly. His attention was occupied by the pain. He barely noticed another woman, who had just walked up to them and was now asking him all kinds of questions. He picked up her name and that she asked what his was though. ”I’m.. Maurr”, He muttered, noticing his throat was sore probably because he had screamed so much. For as far has he got it, this woman was a healer and she was offering to help him. But he couldn’t accept that, right? He was a thrall, he couldn’t pay her. ”I-I n-need to get back.. To work”, He stammered, noticing the taste of blood in his mouth as he spoke. He turned away a bit and spat out a clot of blood, shivering again when the fabric scratched the wounds again.

The world was completely blurred and Visna couldn’t understand if it was because of her tears or simply because she couldn’t think straight. All she knew was that she had to stay next to him. The number of people watching them while whispering in their ears was slowly decreasing. One one hand, she was happy that they were leaving them alone, but on the other one, she really didn’t know what to do to help him.

Visna heard a girl’s voice, someone who seemed to stand close to them was talking about how everything that happened was wrong. She wanted to look up, to look at this girl’s face, to thank her even, but her eyes were locked on Maurr’s shivering body. Few seconds later she saw a piece of fabric blocking the view she had on the boy and the same voice from before offered her a cloak to cover him up. Visna managed to grab the cloak with her shivering hands, after mumbling a thank you. The fabric was heavy and was probably going to itch on the open wounds, but it was the best they had. She slowly put it on Maurr’s shoulders to cover his back, when he firmly grabbed her hand. The girl left the fabric on his shoulders and took his hands in hers, looking in his eyes again, smiling at him. ”It’s okay. I’m here.” She said trying to find her voice back, while her thumbs were caressing Maurr’s hand.

Another voice, another woman talking to them. Visna tried to collect her strength to look up, when she realised that the girl was actually talking to Maurr. She was offering him her help, and introduced herself, saying she was a healer. ”Maybe not everyone in Skagen is scum after all.” Visna commented sourly in her mind. She managed to look up at the girl but then Maurr started moving, muttering he needed to go back to work. The girl furrowed her eyebrows and looked at him right when he coughed blood. She also noticed a deep shiver taking over his body. That was it, he needed help and she was going to do the best she could to fix this situation. Visna raised her gaze once again. ”Please help him.” She said seriously to the girl. ”I can’t stand seeing him suffering like this.” She added then, with tears running down her cheeks again and her throat suddenly sore.

Watching the way the body of this young man was handling the pain he was obviously in, Cecilie tried to keep a neutral expression on her face while she mentally looked him over for clear signs that he’d lost too much blood. She couldn’t see the extent of his injuries after his back had been covered with the cloak, but she noticed the slight trembling in his hands when he clasped onto the young woman in front of him. His breathing was irregular, but both of those were most likely due to the unbelievable amount of pain she assumed he was in, and couldn’t immediately be considered proof that he was in danger of losing too much blood. But she wanted to put a stop to it as soon as possible, just to be safe.

Hi, Maurr,” she replied when he gave her his name, keeping her tone calm. His throat sounded hoarse and she added that to the list of things she’d try to take care of after the important things were sorted. She glanced toward the young woman she assumed was Freyja’s sister, hoping she’d offer her name as well so she could use it, because ‘you there’ was not going to cut if when she inevitably needed her assistance.

Watching the pair of them was heartbreaking. Cecilie knew what it felt like to feel helpless when someone you cared about was hurting, and she hated that feeling. It was one of the things she’d always liked about being a healer. Until that hadn’t been enough. But she could help them right now, and that’s what she was going to do.

She’d been about to start giving instructions, because she didn’t want to touch him after that whole scene without giving them both some warning ahead of time, but he’d likely need more than a little help getting to and staying on his feet. And the sooner he was on his feet, the sooner she could help him. However, he croaked out that he needed to get back to work and she did nothing to hide the look of complete shock that overtook her features. Luckily she wasn’t the only one who thought that he was being ridiculous, it seemed. Looking back and forth between the pair of them quickly, Cecilie immediately started shaking her head at Maurr.

You’re still bleeding, you’re not- you can’t- no. You’re not going back to work.” What was he thinking? Just where did he work? What had he even been whipped for? She had a lot of questions but most of them didn’t need to be answered right now. “You’re no use to anyone in this state, so at least let me help you get cleaned up?” Under no circumstances was she letting him leave to go to work once he agreed to let her help him. Because she was most definitely not above slipping him something to make him sleepy, but she would deal with that when they got there.

We’re going to help you stand up now, okay?” she asked aloud, talking to Maurr but looking at the younger woman to see if she was ready for this. He’d probably be in a lot of pain but that wouldn’t stop soon if they didn’t get moving. “Once you’re on your feet, wrap your arms around our shoulders, and you can rest most of your weight on us,” she instructed, hoping he’d lose this foolish idea about going back to work and just start doing as she said. Things always went smoother once people started doing what she told them to.

come shove me
over the edge.

Slowly his body was shutting down, as it was trying to make the pain more bearable. He was losing consciousness so he wouldn’t feel his back burning anymore. The cloak that covered him now, was stinging his wounds. He whimpered softly whenever he moved and it was digging into his back more. It was Visna who distracted him and made sure he didn’t pass out right there and then in his own pool of blood. He held on to her hand, tried to focus on how she was softly stroking his. He almost didn’t notice the new woman walking up to them. However, when she mentioned she wanted to help, he felt the familiar panic rising. He couldn’t just skip work! What was she thinking? How could she expect him to accept that? “You’re still bleeding, you’re not- you can’t- no. You’re not going back to work.” She insisted. He was about to protest again, when she promised him she would only clean the wounds and then let him go. Visna was also asking her for help, and by the way her voice sounded he realised it would also be better for her state of mind if he gave in. So he grunted softly and nodded. ”F-fine. Clean up only”, He reacted through clenched teeth.

The first step in this hopefully short process was getting him to stand up. He was already looking forward to that, sarcasm. But he was not one to complain. So with a lot of effort he pushed himself up, feeling dizzy from the moment he was on his feet. For a short second he closed his eyes, his face distorted with the expression of the pain he was feeling in his back. The blood that had been on the wooden planks, was now sticking to his body, making him look as if he just came back from war. He wrapped his arms around both of the women, as instructed. But he didn’t put as much weight on them, considering they were both much smaller than he was.
